Women with a disability or special need
We’re committed to reducing the barriers to screening and making breast screens as comfortable and as accessible as possible.
If you are a person who has access requirements or lives with a chronic health condition, in most cases we can support you to have a breast screen.
BreastScreen NSW staff are experienced in assisting women to safely complete their mammogram when adjustments are needed.
Please call us on 13 20 50 to make your booking so that we can discuss any support or adjustments needed.
If you’re unsure whether breast screening is right for you at this time, we encourage you or your carer to talk to your doctor.
We’re wheelchair-friendly
All of our clinics are accessible, including our mobile vans. If you have access requirements, please let us know when booking your appointment to discuss any support or adjustment needs, so that we can allow for extra time and staff if needed.
Wheelchair users and those requiring extra assistance may find our fixed clinics easier to navigate. To find your nearest clinic, search our screening locations.
You can have a breast screen while seated in a wheelchair if the arms of the wheelchair can be removed or lowered. If you use a wheelchair, we will allow extra time for your appointment. Please let us know when you phone to book.
Women with intellectual disability
A range of assistance is available to support women with intellectual disability.
Please call us on 13 20 50 to discuss your individual needs. Carers are also welcome to speak with us to help support their clients to have a breast screen.
We require consent to be provided at all screening appointments.
We provide interpreters
If you are deaf or find it hard to hear or speak to hearing people on the phone, you can contact BreastScreen NSW using the following National Relay Services (NRS):
- For TTY (Speak and Read, Type and Read and Type and Listen), call 133 677, then ask for 13 20 50
For Voice Relay, call 1300 555 727, then ask for 13 20 50
For SMS Relay, text 0423 677 767
For NRS chat, visit nrschat.nrscall.gov.au
We can have an Auslan interpreter at your breast screen. Just let us know when you book.
If you need a language interpreter, call the Translating and Interpreting Service on 13 14 50 and ask for BreastScreen NSW.
Support person for screening
If needed, we encourage women with additional needs to bring a support person such as a carer, friend or family member to attend your breast screen with you. We’re happy to liaise with other services to make any arrangements needed.
Guide and assistance dogs are always welcome. Please advise us when booking.
